About This Quote

People have a natural tendency to anthropomorphize their pets, to ascribe human perceptions and intentions to the animal where none exist. We see faces in doorknobs, voices in the fridge, and feelings in our pets. To understand this concept better, imagine having a pet who is completely different than yourself. Your pet is very independent and has no real sense of what it means to be human.

He or she would never be able to understand that you are feeling guilty for wanting him or her to get dressed up for Halloween or that you are afraid that your parents will get angry with you for not showing up for dinner. However, over time, our pets start to figure out more human-like behaviors. They start thinking about what they want, learning to speak in a way that we can understand, and even start getting angry when we don’t follow through on something we said we would do.

We all know that when our pets take on human traits it’s usually because they have been given a command by us or because they have been taught something by us. In many instances, though, the similarities between us and our pets are purely coincidental. In other words, people have a natural tendency to anthropomorphize their pets when none exists at all!
